Elon Musk’s America Party: Will it Really Pose a New Challenge in American Politics?

A few weeks ago, Elon Musk announced the launch of a new party called “America Party.” This had a huge media impact in the United States. Elon Musk, who had been supporting Donald Trump throughout the campaign and even before, and who later spent a few months in the administration in charge of the DOGE department, decided to found a new party.

Why? Musk’s Tensions with Donald Trump in his final weeks in office already foreshadowed what might happen. In fact, the two subsequently engaged in a social media feud, hurling insults at each other, although they buried the hatchet a few days later.

Why Now?

The so-called Big Beautiful Bill, which was finally passed on the American National Holiday, the 4th of July, was opposed by a minority of the Republican Party, as many claimed that this new law would increase the deficit, something they had fought to change under the Biden administration.

Rand Paul, a Republican senator, has been one of the leading conservative figures opposed to this law, not the entire law, but in part because of the increase in the deficit. This is not surprising, as he comes from the libertarian movement, which mainly fights against government spending and the concentration of political power.

“I support the tax cuts—but adding $5T in new debt isn’t conservative. If Congress can’t cut $9B rescission, voters should demand new representatives,” Paul said in an interview on Fox News.

In fact, from a libertarian perspective, he himself sees Congress as a teenager who cannot be trusted with money: “If your teenager is careless with money (read: Congress), you don’t hand them a $5 trillion credit card. You limit their credit and monitor their spending.”

Elon Musk was also vocal on this issue from the outset, harshly criticizing the new law and the deficit it would bring.

That’s when he started to create the rift, and when the law was finally passed, Elon Musk decided to launch the new party.

What would be the main policies of the “America Party”?

Firstly, it would be a party with a centrist viewpoint but with bold proposals on key issues. Among its priorities are fiscal discipline, reducing the national debt, and limiting spending to what is strictly necessary. Let us remember that this was the main reason for his distancing himself from the GOP. He also wants a profound modernization of the armed forces, incorporating artificial intelligence and robotics to ensure the technological superiority of the United States. Also, he has said on several occasions that the United States should strengthen its drone industry, especially in light of what we have seen in the Russian-Ukrainian war.

According to Musk, the country must lead the global race in artificial intelligence or risk being left behind by rival powers. In addition, he proposes widespread deregulation with an emphasis on the energy sector, promoting greater autonomy and efficiency. The defense of freedom of expression is another central theme. Remember that this is why he purchased Twitter, now X.

Finally, the party would support pro-natalist policies to reverse demographic decline and secure the country’s economic and cultural future. Musk has been extremely vocal on this issue. In fact, he met with Katalin Novak, former president of Hungary and former minister of family affairs, to discuss the family policies that the Hungarian government had implemented.

Can a third party really succeed in the United States?

The United States uses a “simple majority” electoral system, in which only the candidate with the most votes in each district wins. This makes it incredibly difficult for third parties to compete, as votes that do not go to the top two are often wasted.

Historically, there have been attempts by third parties, but they have not been very successful. The Libertarian Party, which advocates precisely the same economic policies as Elon Musk, barely has 3 per cent of the vote, which is very insignificant in American politics.

Likewise, even though there are people who may have some sympathy for Elon Musk and truly believe that his proposals are good, if the Democratic candidate is not moderate, they will probably vote for the Republican candidate to ensure that the outcome is not even worse than it could be with the Republican candidate.

In addition, Elon would need to build a political network and infrastructure that he does not have, something that takes time and years. That was precisely the main reason why Donald Trump decided to join the Republican Party and not run for president as an independent, because he knew it was a decision that would not benefit him and he knew he had to be in one of the major parties.

In conclusion, it is very difficult, if not impossible, for Elon’s party to have a real impact on US national politics. Although you never know, Musk has often been told that what he was doing was impossible and that he would get nowhere, and he has managed to turn things around.
